The community of what has come to be known, as Imam Hussein
Mosque is a small tight knit community very much like a blossoming and
growing family. For many years they have frequented 87 Old Main
Road to join hands with their fellow brethren in prayers.
The background to this community stems from the growth of the Shiite
Faith of Islam in South Africa. For many years during the apartheid
regime, South Africans lay unexposed to the school of Ahlul Bayt (as)
and it was only after the Revolution of the Islamic Republic of Iran in
1979 that the awareness of this school began to spread to this part of
the world.
Consequently a small group of people in Durban, mostly friends, began
to develop an interest towards the teachings of our Holy Prophet
Muhammad (saw) and his Ahlul Bayt (as) with a focus on individuals
who contributed to human progress aiming to seek closeness to Allah
(swt). This resulted in debates amongst each other, reading of books
and frequenting each other’s houses where small prayer groups began.
As the community began to grow, a piece of land was purchased in
1998 (with the kind assistance of Africa Federation, a Khoja Shia Islamic
Muslim Community) in a suburb of the city of Durban called Ottawa.
With time, this what used to be a community of only ten members has to
date grown into a sizeable number of approximately 100 plus members.
As a result, the community now has a need for a well-organized worship
site, dedicated quarters for a resident a’alim, library for reference
resources and a fully functional religious study group or Madressah.
These requirements are impossible to fulfill based on the current
infrastructure, which was inherited when the land at 87 Old Main Road,
Ottawa was initially purchased. Consequently new plans were drawn up
for a fully functional mosque and cultural centre.
This centre (THE COST OF WHICH TO BUILD IS APPROXIMATELY ZAR
5, 5 MILLION, EQUIVALENT TO $700,000) will be the first of its kind
insha-allah not only within the province of Kwa Zulu Natal, of which
Durban is the main city, but also throughout the Republic of South Africa.
It is with great effort that this small but vibrant Shiite community of South
Africa has grown, come together, and taken this bold step in order
to strengthen their bond and progress further insha-allah. We firmly
believe that with your assistance and prayers we can turn this dream of
ours into a reality.
APPEAL FOR SUPPORT:
The parable of those who spend their property in the way of
Allah is as the parable of a grain growing seven ears (with)
a hundred grains in every ear, and Allah multiplies for whom
He pleases and Allah is ample giving, all knowing.
- Holy Qura’an (2:261)
Given the brief background above of the activities and the followers of
the school of Ahul Bayt (as) in South Africa, we humbly and sincerely
request you for your assistance in this noble project. Our intention
is to build none other than the house of Allah (swt) for which our 5th
Imam Muhammad Baqir (as) has said “HUWA JAMEELUN YUHIBBUL
JAMAAL”...Make it nice and beautiful with a spiritual look.
Your donation towards this project surely is your “thawab- ejarea” the
fruits of which you shall benefit in this world and the world hereafter
insha-Allah. We remain hopeful as we invite all to join hands to pursue
the development of religious centers that will beacon humanity to the
Islamic message as taught by Prophet Muhammad (saw) and his purified
family as we seek closeness to Allah (swt).
